The Biblical Metaphor of Amazonian Brazil and IT Offshoring

Brazil is a booming economy which is markedly different form most of the other countries sit is usually compared with. For instance, it has nothing in common with either China or India, usually considered as its competitors. No wonder that Brazil offers new challenges and solutions to offshoring clients who seek results and that too closer home! Brazil is just a few hours away from the U.S.A and the work culture is not very different from it is in the U.S. Moreover, there aren’t huge time differences as one might experience with China or India. This makes Brazil an equally attractive destination of not a more attractive one.

The International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP) usually holds conferences to discuss the future of offshoring and outsourcing and how it might be used as a tool to leverage one’s business. It is a global network that has more than 110,000 members from the top level managerial posts. Michael Corbett, who founded the IAOP in 2005, recently visited Sao Paulo to attend the Brasscom Global IT Forum. IT Decisions met with him for a casual chat about what he felt about Brazil and offshoring as correlates.

For one, he used a biblical metaphor to describe that Brazil is like a land that has many rivers, and one needs to navigate through it, in order to successfully initiate offshoring. He compared China with the way Moses was allowed pathway across the Red sea, only to close behind him. He mentioned that though China offers all help it can at first, problems come up later on as soon as a company places its work in companies located in China.

In Brazil, one clearly knows what to expect and how one can take forward their plans to offshore. While it does seem like a good metaphor, Michael Corbett uses reductionism when dismissing China when pitted against Brazil. Most offshoring destinations have their short comings and advantages.

In China, one has access to great infrastructure and a solid economy, where as Brazil offers cultural and time zone similarities. Both the countries lack in English language capabilities which maybe more important to certain companies. Like they say, one size will never fit all. There is no offshoring destination that is perfect for everybody. One needs to analyse and identify what the core competencies are and which country would best suit them to offshore.
